Art & Design Curriculum Statement
Purpose of Study
Art, craft and design embody many forms of creativity. At Two Rivers High School art and design education engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they are given opportunities to think critically and develop a deeper understanding of art and design. They will explore art and design through the history of art and different cultures.
Aims
Pupils will gain knowledge and understanding of skills and processes and will be able to apply them within their studies.
Two Rivers High art and design curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- Begin to evaluate and analyse creative works
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
What goals do we desire for our students through their study of Art and Design?
- To learn to create their own visual world in a skillful way using the formal elements of Art: line, tone, shape, colour, pattern, form, composition, perspective.
- To develop imagination, originality, curiosity and playfulness in creating their unique visual world.
- To communicate their own viewpoints, ideas and concepts through visual means.
- To critically engage with others’ art, including peers, artists from other times, cultures and artists from contemporary society.
- To enjoy and be passionate about Art and Design, either through critical engagement and appreciation or through creating and making.
Our vision for Art is for all students to recognise art’s wider impact and how it helps them experience the world around them.
Students will be introduced to art from a range of cultures and people and from art history. They will learn to appreciate and critically engage with art made by others.
We will ensure that students have the experience of a wide range of media and develop technical skills using a variety of equipment, techniques and processes. These will include:
- Drawing and painting
- Printmaking
- Collage
- 3D construction
- Sculpture
- Digital processes
AS well as developing students’ love of working with media, materials and techniques we aim to nurture and encourage a love for the subject through their use of imagination, abstract thought and generating original ideas. Through art we aim to contribute to students’ positive wellbeing and mindfulness at school.
Continuous Progression Framework
Students will be taught:
- to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
- to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
- to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
- about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work
- to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
- to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
- about great artists, architects and designers in history
- to use a range of techniques to record their observations in sketchbooks, journals and other media as a basis for exploring their ideas
- to use a range of techniques and media, including painting
- to increase their proficiency in the handling of varied materials
- to analyse and evaluate their own work, and that of others, in order to strengthen the visual impact or applications of their work
about the history of art, craft, design and architecture, including periods, styles and major movements from ancient times up to the present day
